Southampton’s Jason Euell is being linked with a move to Major League Soccer side, Colorado Rapids.

The MLS outfit first made their interest known during the January transfer window, although any move failed to materialise.

However, it appears that the Rapids are still keen to strike a deal for Euell, whose Southampton contract is set to expire at the end of the season.

Saints’ Head Coach, Mark Wotte, has recently said he will place a greater emphasis on his experienced players as his side try to avoid the dreaded drop to League One, but with Euell amongst the top earners at the south coast club, Saints may allow any move to go through to get Euell off the wage bill.

The 32-year-old has previously gone public with his frustration at Saints, after being overlooked for much of the season.

During the January transfer window, Euell wrote an article on his official blog. He wrote, “It’s such a frustrating situation that I find myself in; one minute I’m featuring in the side, then all of a sudden January comes around and I’m no longer wanted again.

“It’s not that I’ve suddenly suffered a drop in form, in fact I am fit and raring to go. I haven’t asked to leave Southampton, I think I have a lot to offer the young side in terms of experience – given the position we find ourselves at present,” Euell added.

“I want to be playing my part in helping the club pull away from danger, so to find myself completely discarded points to just one thing – the club is trying to force me out.”

Despite Euell’s comments, Wotte has shown that he does have a future at the club and that he isn’t being forced out. The veteran midfielder has played a more prominent role since the Dutchman took charge, and he even started Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Bristol City.

If Euell gets his wish and continues to feature for the Saints, he may well opt to stay at Southampton for the remainder of his contract.

  • Tricky one really. If Colorado Rapids make a firm offer, do we accept and get Euell off the wage bill, or do we keep hold of him until the end of the season and play him to try and save us from relegation?

  • Hmmm, this is a tricky one. Euell has looked good lately, and his experience is exactly what we need. BUT, and it is a big BUT – he is one of the highest earners and everyone knows our financial predicament. It would be a lot easier to have him off the wage bill – but like you say dan, do we risk not having him in the team?!?

  • Based on today’s performance, Saints would be foolish to let Euell leave. He was absolutely brilliant, he got up for every ball, chased down everything and put himself about all game. Not to mention the fact that he brought the best out of Saga too. Top draw performance. Lets hope he can reproduce this kind of form for the remainder of the season!
