After a slow start Saints went into yesterday’s deadline day scramble in desperate need of at least one addition. The area which Vital Southampton had highlighted in previous articles was a creative edge in midfield. Now an attacking midfielder has finally arrived at St Marys will he fit the bill?

Idiakez has worked with Burley before and was recently described by the Saints boss to be one of the best dead ball specialists he has worked with. Saints fans found out all to well what a danger man Idiakez is from set pieces, when in last season’s visit to Pride Park he scored a penalty and provided the cross for defender Andrew Davies to score.

The Spaniard also knows Saints striker Gregorz Rasiak well and the two formed quite a partnership for Derby in Burley’s days, if this kind of partnership could be repeated then all the better for Saints.

He will also provide a different approach for the centre midfield alongside either Jermaine Wright or John Viafara, the partnership of Viafara and Wright has been seen to lack a cutting edge and hopefully Idiakez will provide this.

However, Idiakez at 32 years of age, is not getting any younger and it remains to be seen if his game is still up to the pacey and physical element of the Championship.

Also in the game against Derby at Pride Park Idiakez did not have much of an impact on the game and was rarely on the ball.

It looks as though Saints have got themselves an absolute steal at 250k, we will have to wait and see if Idiakez has the desired effect.
