Southampton defender Jose Fonte has said that the players are all keyed up for the first home game of the season. Talking to Saint Player he said, “For the fans and for the players as well it`s going to be a massive game’

“We want to please the fans and the fans are excited to see us again, so we want to put on a good show for them, and hopefully get the three points that we all want.”

Opponents Sunderland were defeated 1-0 in their opening day fixture against Fulham, but Fonte feels that no-one should read too much into that result.

“I think it`s going to be a very hard game actually, because I saw the highlights of them against Fulham and they looked very good to me, very lively,” he said.

Feelings that I understand as I also believe Sunderland will be a very tough nut to defeat. They appeared extremely unlucky last week to lose to Fulham after missing a hat full of chances.

Saints finally managed a win on the first day of the season in the Premier League which also exercised a few ghosts. Last season the Baggies beat us twice without us managing a goal.

As Jose says, “It was good for me and for the team, and for the fans,” he described. “Last year we got beat twice by them, we all know that, so we felt as though we owed them something, and coming away with a clean sheet and three points on the opening day of the season was definitely a very good thing and I was very pleased.”

A lot of positivity and with the squad now stronger than we have seen for many a long year maybe we do have something to look forward to this season.

In Fonte’s own words, “Massive credit to the Chairman and to the manager, They`ve delivered by bringing in three massive players for big numbers and they`ve proved their qualities because they`ve made the team step up a level and everyone is performing better since they arrived because everyone fears for their places as they bring competition.’

All good news a s far as I am concerned.
