New Chairman Leon Crouch believes that Southampton can win promotion this season.
In his first interview since taking over from Michael Wilde he told the official site: ‘It is very tight and this race will probably go right to the wire but I firmly believe we will do it.
‘Monday night was a set-back, particularly after we played so well. We could have been out of sight before Preston even had a meaningful attempt on goal.
‘But it is no good feeling sorry for ourselves. The key thing is to bounce back at Stoke and then make sure we win the home games against Cardiff and Colchester.
‘We have to put this defeat behind us and come on strong in the last 10 games – and I know this club has the spirit to do that.
‘You only need to look at the passion and commitment of the 500 fans who made the long trek to Preston on a bitterly cold Monday night when the game was on television.
‘That kind of backing sums up what this great club is about. It is vital we all get behind George and the players and pull together – that will be key during the run-in.
‘We have a top manager and back-room staff, a terrific squad and fantastic supporters. We have a great set-up behind the scenes and we are all working hard to achieve our goal.’
