Opinion: Securing the future of key asset is imperative to Southampton moving forward

|

So finally a bit of good for Southampton and the supporters.

In case you haven’t heard by now, manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has signed a new four-year contract at the club, which will keep him at St Mary’s until 2024.

Having inherited the reigns from Mark Hughes back in December 2016, the Austrian tactician has become a popular figure on the South Coast and has pulled our side back on course following a recent game that I can’t bring myself to mention.

We now sit 14th in the Premier League table, seven points above the relegation zone and just four points behind Burnley who are currently in 10th place.

Will Hasenhuttl turn Southampton's fortunes around?

Yes

No

No

Hasenhuttl’s contributions will be pivotal if we are to climb back up towards the European places once more. His influence in the dressing room is clear to see, following recent comments from defender Ryan Bertrand. He said that he has a clear style of play and “leaves no stone unturned”.

This illustrates that he is a well-respected boss in the eyes of the players and that they are willing to play for him.

Hasenhuttl’s record at Southampton is a solid one. From 60 games in charge, the 52-year-old has managed to accumulate a points-per-game average of 1.25, winning 21 matches and scoring 85 goals in the process, as per TransferMarkt.

Although we have had better seasons than this, we’ve certainly had worse. Hasenhuttl has the respect and the leadership qualities to take us forward. Signing a long-term deal can assist him in masterminding a cunning plan, to forge a path back into Europe.
