Former Leeds United and Premier League attacker Noel Whelan has begged for his former club to sign Che Adams this month.

Speaking to Football Insider, the BBC Radio Leeds commentator has voiced his support in Marcelo Bielsa’s side going in for the Southampton attacker, who has been relentlessly linked with a move to the Championship giants this January.

The Daily Mail report that Adams is likely to stay this month following public calls from Ralph Hasenhuttl via The Southern Daily Echo that the young attacker will remain on the south coast this month following some promising performances with the Saints in recent weeks, but for Whelan, he was keen on Leeds tying up a deal soon.

Does Che Adams need a loan move to regain his confidence?

Yes, he has to return to scoring ways

No, he has shown he is on the right path at Southampton

The 45-year-old pundit said: “When you just look at his performances, he had a great game against Chelsea, set one up the other day for Southampton. He’s 23-years of age, we’ve shown how desperately we need a striker and we’ve shown on many occasions we need strength in depth, something we don’t have. If Leeds are serious about bringing that experience in, a proven goalscorer, well it’s right there for you now.”

Adams has been linked by multiple outlets as a target for Leeds this month after Eddie Nketiah returned to Arsenal after his loan spell with the Championship side was cut short due to a lack of first-team minutes, and Whelan believes that the attack is an area of the pitch the Whites need strengthening.

Whelan concluded with: “You’ve seen enough on Saturday that we need strength in depth in that area, we need someone who is not going to be 21 or 18, we need someone that’s proven, can score goals in the Championship, someone that has every attribute straight away so they can join this group of players straight away. He’s the one, he’s the one, now if Leeds United are going to put all their eggs in one basket and that’s the one you want, show your commitment then.”
