Report: Saints loanee with one goal in 2019 linked with move that could result in loss for club

|

Southampton striker Guido Carrillo has reportedly been contacted by Liga MX side Cruz Azul over a potential transfer.

According to Radio del Plata via Sport Witness, Carrillo has been approached by the Mexican side after an unsuccessful second loan-spell with Leganes this season that has only seen the Argentine striker score just one goal for the La Liga side in all of 2019 as stats from Transfermarkt show.

The 28-year-old striker joined up with former Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino with the Madrid-based side in the 2018/19 season and again for this campaign, yet the 48-year-old manager parted ways with the Spanish club this October, leading many to believe that Carrillo’s time with both Leganes and Southampton could be coming to an end at last.

Is Carrillo Southampton's worst ever signing?

Yes

No

Carrillo was signed by Southampton by Pellegrino for what is still a club-record fee of £19m from Monaco in January 2018, with stats from Transfermarkt showing that the Argentine striker had a car-crash of a spell on the south coast as the former Ligue 1 champions scored zero goals in just 10 appearances for the Saints.

With Southampton spending close to £20m for a striker that has only managed one goal this year as well as no strikes at all in the Premier League, it will be seemingly likely that the Saints will be moving on their club-record signing for a massive financial loss, with Transfermarkt currently valuing Carrillo at just £6.75m.

Carrillo’s horror-show of a transfer will serve as an important lesson for Southampton as well as standout as a reminder that the club should be spending their limited funds on players they need and not flashy names who seemingly won’t add much to the squad.
