With Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy’s stock continuing to rise, ably backed up by highly rated stopper Angus Gunn, the future of former England international Fraser Forster remains open for debate and he has now been linked with a potential move to Championship side Stoke City.

On the face of it, Stoke doesn’t sound a likely destination owing to the fact fellow England keeper Jack Butland is on their books, but as the weeks pass his own future is being linked with transfers to numerous clubs once again.

Should Butland go, it could be the exact move our 30-year-old needs to get himself up and running following his fall from grace at St Mary’s Stadium.

The history is well known as to how and why he lost his place as our struggles truly began, but given the current speculation it could possibly be a great move for him and allow him to re-establish himself really.

Despite a poor start to the season Gary Rowett’s side have started picking up results, and they harbour ambitions of returning to the top-flight, so dropping a division really shouldn’t be an issue.
