It was being reported yesterday that new (or old, depending on how you look at it) Republic of Ireland manager Mick McCarthy was keen to speak to Southampton attacker Nathan Redmond over potentially switching his allegiance to the Emerald Isle.

The 24-year-old versatile attacker has been one of the highlights so far in an otherwise dull campaign for Southampton, and he has been given a second wind under new manager Ralph Hasenhuttl. Having arrived from Norwich City back in the summer of 2016, he now has over 100 appearances to his name in our shirt, with a return of 15 goals.

Six of those have come since late December as we make a better, albeit inconsistent, attempt to avoid relegation under the Austrian.

Speaking to the Daily Echo McCarthy was hopeful that Redmond would be interesting in making the switch from England to Eire as he formulates plans for the future.

“I’ve been speaking to the agent. Maybe he still has designs on playing for England, I don’t know. I haven’t asked him the question because I haven’t spoken to him. I’ve been trying to meet him.”

It’s obviously early stages, and Redmond does have an England cap to his name, but it came in a friendly against Germany so it’s not binding under the rules.
