Well it’s been coming, but the calls for Nigel Adkins’ head and newspaper speculation about crunch meetings has begun.

The Daily Mail say that Adkins has been ‘locked in crunch talks’ today with a furious Nicola Cortese and that he’s resigned to the fact that he will lose his job ahead of the game at the weekend against Swansea.

Whether there’s any truth in that we’ll find out shortly, but Adkins was quoted by numerous outlet’s following last night’s defeat as saying.

‘Someone is always going to be the favourite to be sacked. If you’re bottom of the league, you should be the favourite probably. I’m very positive, I know I’m a better manager today than when I joined Southampton and I’m not going to hide away from that, but what a great challenge we face. If I don’t believe we can do it, then the players aren’t going to believe we can do it. I don’t think anybody needs to give anyone a vote of confidence.’

Doesn’t sound like somebody resigned to losing their job to me, and it would be fool-hardy to start a managerial merry-go-round given what he has achieved with us and given the fact that this is a steep learning curve for everybody at the club.

You have to give players and the manager time to adjust, this season was never going to be easy and whilst it’s slightly un-nerving that the spirit and fight we showed at the start of the season has somewhat disappeared, confidence will be rock bottom at the moment so we need to dig in hard, keep plugging away and look to turn the corner.

If we can get our spirit back we will turn that corner, but that’s not going to happen by playing a blame game and having staff and players having to deal with speculation.

Stick with it, and we’ll be better for it.
