Saints boss Mark Wotte states how even a point against Sheffield United wouldn’t have been good enough.
The Saints seemed to have snatched a point in a match they should have won, when Andrew Surman smashed home a Lloyd James cross.
But Jamie Ward’s 93 minute winner lifted the Blades to fourth and deepened Southampton’s relegation fear.
‘I could not settle for one point against a team with only 10 men,’ Wotte said. ‘A point does nothing for us and we needed three so I had to push people forward and we got caught out.
‘It was a great finish from Jamie Ward but nine times out of 10 the ball would have gone wide.
‘We have not lost the war, we have only lost a battle and we have to keep on fighting. Every game is massive for us from now on and we need to win them all.’
