Southampton boss Mark Wotte fears that player of the season Kelvin Davis will leave St. Mary’s this summer.

Davis, 32, has had interest from some Premiership and Championship sides, and the Dutch boss feels that he could leave due to the financial trouble the club is in.

Davis, however, has shown his loyalty to the club and told told the official website that he wanted to stay at the club:

‘I love playing for this Football Club.’ he said after the Forest defeat.

‘I like living in the area and my family is settled here. League One certainly doesn’t scare me and I can see myself playing here next season and indeed for the rest of my career, which is something I said two or three weeks into my first year here.

‘I said how proud I was when I first took on the captain’s armband, which was away at Preston I think, where we were 2-0 down and won the game. I don’t think it had anything to do with what I said at half time but it was one of the highs in my experience of leading the side.

Nonetheless, Wotte knows how crucial Davis is to the side, and if the ex-Sunderland keeper stays, Southampton’s season in the third tier will be a lot easier.

Talking to the official website, Wotte explained the situation:

‘Kelvin Davis said that he wanted to wait until the last possible day before moving on elsewhere if he receives another offer and expressed again that he wanted to stay,’

‘I also told him again that he is very important to us and that he will be the first person to be offered a new contract, as soon as there is someone in a position to do so and we have secured a better future for our club.’

  • Davis is the first player I’d choose to keep (if we had that choice!) But obviously he is a great keeper, and deserves to play at a higher level. He has stated that he’d like to stay at St. Mary’s, but along with Surman and Lallana offers from other teams could tempt them…

  • I’d love for him to stay too. He has been by FAR the player of the season, and it would be such a shame to see him leave. I just hope that we get some money in to tempt him (and others) to stay.
