Southampton midfielder Paul Wotton will miss the last game of the season after suffering severe facial injuries during the 2-2 draw with Burnley.

The 31-year-old clashed with Claret’s defender Clark Carlisle and the ex-Plymouth came off worse in the 50/50 tackle.

The situation was made worse as the final whistle sparked a pitch invasion and Wotton needed to be escorted to safety.

Southampton first team physio Mo Gimpel spoke to saintsfc.co.uk after the match and said: ‘Paul is home now, but he will not train or play any further part this season.

‘He required 30 stitches on his lips and a cut by his eye and ten injections during two hours of reconstructive facial surgery.’

Wotton’s two front teeth were pushed up into his gums, but the clash was deemed to be accidental when the two players spoke in the dressing room after the match.

‘Both players were watching the ball and Clark Carlisle came and apologised afterwards. They agreed that there was no intent, but Paul said that he was unsighted by the sun and didn’t jump with his arm up to protect him and unfortunately got struck.’
