Southampton’s 2018/19 campaign ended on a high as we secured our future and avoided relegation for the season under manager Ralph Hasenhuttl and although there were plenty of lows across the year, there were a number of highs when it came to significant improvement from some players and the emergence of Academy graduate Yan Valery.

The 20-year-old youngster made his debut in the EFL Cup back in November of the campaign, and from that moment on he didn’t really look back, making 24 appearances in total (21 starts) and contributing two cracking goals and an assist.

Plenty feel his future is bright and he’s already come in for significant praise from quite a few people, including the gaffer for how he adjusted to the top flight and our gaffer has been at it again.

“What nobody sees is that he’s working everyday with our coaches, even if he’s off. That is his secret. He has amazing physical attributes and he has a strong desire to work on his weaknesses.”

Strong words and also a message to other youngsters looking to break through on the kind of attitude Hasenhuttl is looking from people when it comes to a willingness to demand improvements from themselves.

Given his age and the development he’s yet to make, it’s understandable as to why he’s so highly thought of.
