Earlier this afternoon Southampton took to the St Mary’s Pitch to open our 2018/19 Premier League campaign against Burnley.
It was hardly a thrilling affair as both sides played out a scoreless draw on the day and it’s fair to say that Burnley started more brightly than we did as they have already been in competitive action this summer owing to the Europa League journey they treated themselves to with their top-flight finish last term.
For ourselves, we did largely have goalkeeper Alex McCarthy to thank for our clean sheet, but after last season that is a positive in itself as he continues to go from strength to strength.
Whilst Jack Stephens and Jannik Vestergaard were probably the other two players to really impress, I doubt few will disagree that McCarthy gets the top billing for this 90 minutes.
