Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s future remains unclear at Southampton after hinting that he could leave soon, but it may not be all doom and gloom.

The Denmark international could be on his way out of the South Coast outfit have been heavily linked with a move to Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur, with Jose Mourinho taking a keen interest in him.

If this does happen, the question will have to be asked to manager Ralph Hasenhuttl as to what system he will implement and what players he will use going forward to take his place.

For me, there is the option to give James Ward-Prowse the captain’s armband, a loyal servant to the Saints’ cause and someone who deserves. But this will also give a golden opportunity for Hasenhuttl to implement his potential secret weapon.

Does William Smallbone deserve a chance at Southampton?

No

Will Smallbone has not seen much Premier League action so far in his short career but has certainly made a bid impression with the Saints’ faithful.

The 20-year-old made his debut during our 2-0 victory against Huddersfield Town in the FA Cup back in January and received glowing compliments from his boss.

These remarks could indicate that he has a bright future on the South Coast and has already given the fans a fascinating insight into what he is all about with his two Premier League outings.

Having graduated through the club’s youth programme, he will be looking to stamp his authority on the first-team.

As I’ve previously said, the more chances he gets in the side, the more opportunities will arise. With a player that looks so composed in possession and is always eager to starting attacks, he has nothing to lose and, perhaps, a lot to gain.
