Southampton’s heavy defeat to Manchester City on Sunday afternoon was probably expected by all Southampton fans if we’re being absolutely honest.

Our defensive issues this year added to our inability to suitably test opposition goalkeepers with any regularity always left us open against a side as clinical as City have proven to be. We won’t be the only side they take apart this year, and we are by no means the first side to be taken apart by them either.

That knowledge brings small comfort for anyone in attendance though and it would be puerile to think otherwise. Fans may have made this game a dead rubber, but the manner and size of the defeat naturally only brings greater questions to the head of Mark Hughes and the media aren’t going to miss that trick.

The Coventry Telegraph didn’t miss a trick covering the latest betting odds on a new gaffer.

Gordan Strachan is one name in the frame now for a return but he’s far from alone.

David Moyes 7/2
Sam Allardyce 6/1
Martin O’Neill 7/1
Brendan Rodgers 7/1
Roberto Martinez 10/1
Michael O’Neill 10/1
Alan Pardew 10/1
Louis van Gaal 12/1
Gordon Strachan 16/1

That’s what’s on offer at Paddy Power apparently but it feels like from the fire to the frying pan with many of the names doing the rounds.
