It’s been claimed this week that Southampton are continuing their return to ‘the Southampton Way’ and increasing our priority on young talent under manager Ralph Hasenhuttl by taking a serious interest in Shresbury Town defender Rhys Davies.

The original claim seems to emanate from Football Insider and they claim that we have already taken the youngster on trial at Staplewood to cast a closer eye over him, and he impressed our youth coaches.

Typically, we are only one of a number of clubs said to have been keeping an eye on him from the Premier League and Championship level but it wouldn’t be the rumour mill if that wasn’t the case.

The 17-year-old has been away from Shrewsbury this season, taking in loan spells with Conference North side Nuneaton Borough and latterly Chippenham Town in the Conference South as he gained experience and valuable more seniors minutes under his belt.

Whilst no fees or offers are spoken about in the report, the assumption is that the fullback will be the subject of a few bids come the summer.

We’ll have to see the reported speculation is true.
