Report: European club attempting to lure £9m-rated Southampton metronome who is open to move

Celta Vigo are monitoring Oriol Romeu’s situation at Southampton, with the Catalonia-born midfielder reportedly keen on a move to the La Liga side.

Galicia Press report via Sport Witness that the Celta boss Oscar Garcia is a fan of the 28-year-old and that Romeu is also a fan of the manager, with the report also claiming that the Spanish side asked about the former Chelsea player’s availability during negotiations to bring Sofiane Boufal to the club on loan in 2018.

Despite being a staple in the Saints midfield since joining the club in 2015, with stats from Transfermarkt showing the midfield metronome has made 176 appearances in total for the south coast side, Romeu has seen little first-team action this season in Ralph Hasenhuttl’s 4-2-2-2 formation.

Is the defence the number one area Ralph must improve this window?

Yes, we leak in too many goals

No, things are starting to turn around for us

As stats from Transfermarkt show, the former Barcelona academy player has not started a game since Southampton’s revival in the Premier League which has seen the club shoot up the league table from 19th to 12th, with Romeu only making brief substitute appearances against the likes of Chelsea, Tottenham and Leicester City.

With Celta interested in a move and Romeu keen on a return to Spain, a transfer could well materialise in the summer transfer window, with the report stating that the La Liga side aren’t prioritising this signing this month despite the departure of key player Stanislav Lobotka to Napoli.

Romeu’s contract at Southampton is set to expire in the summer of 2021, meaning that Celta will likely make a move for the Catalonian midfielder in the following transfer window, where Hasenhuttl might be more open to an extra body on the bench departing the club for good.
