Ian Wright has claimed that Danny Ings could be a secret weapon of sorts for England if his Premier League form for Southampton continues.
Speaking on the Monday Night Club via BBC Sport, the former Arsenal legend and Premier League icon admitted that the 27-year-old striker has what it takes to represent the Three Lions this year following a sensational season with the south coast side.
As stats from Transfermarkt show, Ings has been in brilliant form all season for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side this campaign, with the former Liverpool attacker hitting 16 goals in all competitions for Southampton, with his goals in the Premier League being a defining factor for the Saints.

Ings’ 14 goals in the English top-flight are only bettered by fellow countryman Jamie Vardy as stats from BBC Sport show, and the attacker’s strikes for Southampton have won the south coast club an impressive 12 points this season, taking the Saints to just four points off a Europa League spot in the league table.
Wright said about the Southampton no. 9’s form this season: “Ings is doing brilliantly. He makes a lot of goals out of nothing. I hope he can continue his form. After what he has been through, he deserves it. When you see the goals he is scoring – brilliant runs, half chances – if he can continue that form he can have a Toto Schillaci or a Diego Forlan (tournament).”
With Ings only representing England once at senior level back in 2015, the Southampton star could be a nifty player for Gareth Southgate to call upon given the striker’s ability to worm his way into goalscoring opportunities which have made him such a nuisance for Premier League defenders this season.
