Darren Bent has voiced his backing for Liverpool playmaker Adam Lallana to return to Southampton six years after leaving the south coast club.

The former Tottenham attacker claimed to Football Insider that the 31-year-old playmaker would be an ideal fit for the Saints in the summer after it was revealed by The Liverpool Echo via Football London that Lallana will leave Liverpool at the end of this season after his contract with the Premier League leaders expires.

Lallana left Southampton as captain of the club after the Saints agreed a £25m offer from Liverpool for the England international in 2014 as reported by BBC Sport, yet the now 31-year-old midfielder has found it hard to break into the Reds first-team in recent years, with stats from Transfermarkt showing that the Merseyside player has only managed two goals and two assists in the past three seasons in all competitions for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

When asked as to where Lallana could go in the summer, Bent answered: “Southampton, I could see him going back there. I can see him going back to Southampton. The one that everyone says whenever you talk about a player dropping down is Everton but that’s not going to happen.

“Southampton would be perfect. He needs to go and start playing again regularly. He’s been a great servant for Liverpool, he’s won some great trophies there but he’s spent way too much time for someone of his ability not playing games.”

Injuries have crippled Lallana’s playing career at Liverpool after a bright start for the reigning European champions as stats from Transfermarkt show, and with the midfielder leaving Southampton on fairly bad terms with supporters, Saints fans would seemingly be against their former captain returning to the club after nearly three seasons of being well below his best.
