Report: Saints star keen to ‘achieve our goal of staying in the PL’ despite free agency looming

Cedric Soares has confessed that he is determined to play his part in keeping Southampton in the Premier League before the defender leaves this club this summer.

Speaking to The Southern Daily Echo, the Portuguese fullback admitted that despite his contract expiring come the end of the season and the former Sporting Lisbon star stating his desire to leave the club in an interview with The Telegraph, Cedric is eager to do everything in his powers to achieve success with Southampton this season.

After being in-and-out of the starting XI at the start of the season, Cedric has reclaimed his spot in the Saints first-team which has seen the south coast side embark on a sensational run in recent weeks, with stats from Transfermarkt showing that the 28-year-old fullback has started every game since the 2-1 defeat to Everton that kick-started Southampton’s run of just two losses in their past 10 Premier League games.

Southampton’s results in recent weeks have seen the side climb out of the relegation zone and comfortably into midtable, and for Cedric, Premier League survival is still the main goal for the club despite the Saints now being closer to a Europa League spot that the bottom three.

Cedric said: “I want to help achieve our goal of staying in the Premier League. I am completely focused on helping the team, so I won’t change that. This is definitely the most important thing.”

Although the Portuguese international won’t be at Southampton around beyond this season, Cedric has managed to win the trust and support back from the Saints fans who had previously turned their back on him following his bombshell announcement, and his performances in recent weeks have been influential in the south coast side shooting up the league table and away from the threat of relegation.
