Southampton look set to tussle with Liverpool once more in the battle to sign Werder Bremen midfielder Milot Rashica, according to reports.

WESER-KURIER revealed back in February that the Reds were initially interested in the Kosovo international, with the Saints ‘writing down’ their interest in the Bundesliga attacker.

The same newspaper claimed that Rashica would be happy to use us as a stepping stone in order to engineer a move to an elite club.

This has been confirmed in this week’s edition of SportBild (via Sport Witness), which revealed that both sides will lock horns in the transfer market to bring the Kosovan to the Premier League, hopefully to the South Coast.

Rashica has a buyout clause of €38m (£33.2m) which is valid until June 15th, which will be reduced to €18m if Bremen suffer relegation this season.

Would Milot Rashica be a good signing for Southampton?

His side are currently 17th in the Bundesliga standings, four points behind Fortuna Dusseldorf in 16th and in danger of dropping out of the top tier in German football.

The report adds that the player’s preference is to either continue playing football in Germany or to make a switch to the Premier, with no significant indication on what decision he has made from the two.

We are familiar with those pesky Reds, aren’t we? Since 2014, Liverpool have taken six players off the Saints’ books and paid us approximately £167m worth of fees, including a record £75m for Virgil van Dijk in January 2018.

Rashica is a top talent and has scored 10 goals and provided five assists in 24 appearances for Bremen this season. His versatility means that he can play in any position across the frontline, where he has scored a number of goals from different positions.

He is a typical pacey winger who likes to dribble, cut inside and is a serious counter-attacking threat that could benefit any team. In the Bundesliga this season, he has averaged 2.2 dribbles and three shots per game, illustrating his attacking potency and his ability to trouble defences.

He would be a fantastic addition to our squad. Being realistic though, it will be difficult to fend off Liverpool if their interest is serious enough.
