“Setting their stall out early” – Carl Anka predicts what key asset’s new contract could mean

|

Southampton received a smothering of good support after the club decided to hand manager Ralph Hasenhuttl a new contract.

After our heavy defeat to Leicester City before Christmas, the Austrian tactician was rewarded by his employers following a stunning turnaround which saw them climb up to 14th in the Premier League standings.

The Athletic journalist Carl Anka had his say on what it means for the club going forward and whether it’s a sign of things to come for the South Coast side.

Is Hasenhuttl still the right man for the job?

Yes, he needs more time

No, he's out of ideas

Anka said:

“When you play Southampton, you will know you’re going to have to deal with a high press. You’re going to get beat up. And there’s a good chance Southampton will get away with some bookings too. Football will, of course, remain football, twisting and turning and devising ways to make a mockery of long-term plans, but the commitment between club and manager is refreshing.

He added:

The Premier League has a new irritant and it plays in red and white stripes.

It was great news that the former RB Leipzig boss decided to stay with us after such a miraculous turn of events before the campaign was temporarily suspended.

The optimism from Anka could be welcomed with open arms by plenty of the St Mary’s faithful after outperformance were steadily improving as the weeks went by. The win in the reverse fixture at Leicester City optimised how far Southampton had come in such a short space of time.

For someone that is so well respected on and off the pitch, it is the right move for the club to make and possibly a sign of things to come in the near future.
