Former England international goalkeeper Paul Robinson has slammed Southampton for “unfairly” pricing Celtic target Fraser Forster out of a transfer away from St Mary’s.

The English shot-stopper has got his career back on track in the Scottish Premiership as he predominantly featured in between the sticks as the Hoops lifted a historic ninth time in a row following a board meeting.

The 32-year-old managed to keep 28 clean sheets and only conceded 17 goals from 39 appearances for Neil Lennon’s side, which is a very impressive record at any level.

Speaking to Football Insider, Robinson was not kind towards his parent club after our treatment towards a player that has been nowhere near Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side.

Does Forster have a future at Southampton?

Yes

Yes

No

“Southampton have unfairly priced him out of a deal at the moment,” Robinson said. “We are talking about a player who has not been anywhere near the first-team squad in 12-18 months. He was surplus to requirements.

“He has gone to Celtic and rejuvenated his career and now looks like a top-class goalkeeper again.”

Forster arrived on the South Coast back in 2014 from the Scottish champions for £10m on a four-year basis and put pen to paper on a further five-year stay three years later.

With Southampton set to resume our Premier League campaign away to Norwich City on Friday, Forster’s future is unlikely to be high on Hasenhuttl’s list of priorities, as harsh as that may do.

Robinson raises a good point when it comes to the £70,000-a-week outcast being nowhere near our line-up, but whatever happened to prevent player power from taking over football?

Our club has stood firm on what we believe is the right price for Forster, and good on us for doing that. He has a contract with us until 2022 and as a football club, we expect him to honour that and not to worry about other teams.
