Lots of Southampton fans have been reacting to reports that long-serving Saints duo Ryan Bertrand and Oriol Romeu will be handed extensions to their current contracts.
According to the Telegraph, both join Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg on a list of players that we want to to keep as all of their contracts expire next year, with the latter looking more likely to leave.
Bertrand is the only senior left-back at Ralph Hasenhuttl’s disposal at this time, while Romeu almost left the club during the January transfer window as Celta Vigo showed their interest in the Spaniard, but decided to stay at St Mary’s with the Daily Echo suggesting that we did not want him to leave.
Do Ryan Bertrand and Oriol Romeu deserve new contracts?
Yes
No
Both players have played over 180 times for Southampton, with Bertrand scoring eight goals and providing 19 assists during that time, with Romeu finding the net five times and has conjured up two assists.
With this in mind, supporters applauded the club’s move and made their feelings clear on social media. One fan said that it would be “good news if true”, while another believes that it “makes sense” due to the current circumstances in the footballing world.
Makes sense. Cheaper to give them new contracts than find replacements.

Feel for Romeu..become a bit part player. Delighted he’s staying though. Bertrand has been great & the ultimate wind up merchant. Good move #saintsfc ๐๐ป

Surprised about Romeu, hes struggled under Ralph but heโs a solid pro and it shows more stability at the club

Looks like Ralphโs plan is to keep hold of our longer serving, most experienced players, in order for them to help ease in the younger players heโs bound to sign during the summer. Not a bad plan per say, weโll see how it goes tho https://t.co/IoHEq6aY1V
