Mark Wotte has been sacked by Southampton Football Club.

The Saints were taken over yesterday by Swiss tycoon Markus Liebherr, and his plans for the south coast outfit did not include the Dutch manager.

The club have praised Wotte and are grateful for his input to the club and wish him well in the future.

The new owners of Southampton expect to have a new boss put in place within one week to get prepared for the season ahead.

A club source spoke to the Daily Echo: ‘We are very grateful for Mark`s efforts.

‘This is consistent with having a clean break.

‘The recruitment process for a new manager is under way.

‘Hopefully there will be somebody in place by the end of next week, maybe earlier than that but there are lots of people to speak to.’

  • I must say I’m delighted to hear this. Clearly the new owners have serious intentions of getting out of L1 with this bold move to sack Wotte. I do hope we can get an experience English manager who know’s the League and can get us back to where we belong. COYR!!!! Exciting times…

  • Think Wotte had to go, but not so quickly! Now our new manager (Boothroyd for me) will need time to get to know the squad and try to bring in his players and we start less than a months time!

  • It says in ‘The Times online’ that Micky Adams is a contender, but that isn’t going to happen. Micky is Vale through and through.

  • Boothroyd wud b good, but i wud’nt mind Stevie Coppell, he’s got good record at lower league clubs.

  • Who i WOULD like is WGS, but i think he has distanced himself from it according to the papers…which is a real shame! The only reason he left was Mr Lowe & his cronnies.
