Southampton centre-half Wesley Hoedt hasn’t had a great 2018/19 campaign so far and he did become a go-to player for blame and criticism with our struggles in the opening half of the year.

Austrian manager Ralph Hasenhuttl quickly made his mind up about the 24-year-old and shipped him out to Celta Vigo during the January transfer window, with his last appearance for us coming in the 3-2 defeat to Fulham at the end of November.

Following his reported £15million arrival from Lazio back in August 2017, he departed with 45 starting appearances to his name and the return of one goal. Given how his time came to an end, it’s incredibly unlikely he will build on those appearances levels and it’s about us getting him in some good form now to encourage a deal next summer.

With some reports claiming last week that Hoedt had impressed enough in his games so far to tempt his new club into doing a permanent deal, outlet Faro de Vigo have carried an interview with him, and he sounds like he’d welcome such a development as he doesn’t really want to return.

“At the moment, the decision isn’t mine. It depends on how the season goes, first. I like being here, but I still have a contract with Southampton. I’m currently playing for Celta and I will give my all to play my best football. Like I said, we’ll see what happens in the summer, but, of course, I would like to continue in this great club.”

With a buy clause already in place come the end of the season should Celta choose to option it, it would be in the best interests of all parties really.
