Saints Match Zone

“We Wanted To Get Something” & Southampton Almost Did – Hasenhuttl

|

With Southampton pulling themselves back out of the relegation zone in the Premier League with victory in the last match, today gave us a tough trip to Old Trafford to face a resurgent Manchester United side, now under the charge of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Most would certainly have taken a point from this one so we remained unbeaten.

Although United better dominated the game, we had some fire about us and were creating changes and young Academy graduate opened his career scoring account in the 26th minute with a fabulous effort to give us the 1-0 lead. There were also a couple of penalty shouts that didn’t go our way.

The hosts hit back hard in the second half and having drawn themselves level, just ahead of the hour mark they had a 2-1 advantage. James Ward-Prowse’s recent improvement continued, as he hit a spectacular set piece to make it 2-2 with 15 minutes remaining.

United retook the lead with two minutes left of normal time and having been denied a clear cut penalty, the referee predictably awarded the hosts one but they wasted the chance as Angus Gunn saved with his legs.

3-2 was how it finished, but there were certainly positives.

Speaking to the media following the fulltime whistle, manager Ralph Hasenhuttl said of the game.
