Yesterday marked the five year anniversary of the arrival of England left-back Ryan Bertrand to Southampton from Chelsea.

The now 29-year-old worked his way through their youth ranks and certainly tasted success when appearing in their first team, having an FA Cup and a Champions League title win under his belt, but the bulk of his games came from numerous loan spells away from Stamford Bridge.

In the summer of 2014, he arrived at St Mary’s Stadium initially on a loan spell, before turning the deal permanent for a reported £10million on February 2. With Southampton’s turn in form and our struggles, as one of the more experienced players in the group, and often wearing the armband, he was one player who took significant criticism from sections of the fanbase, especially as he struggled to recapture the form fans expected following his more recent injury problems.

Manager Ralph Hasenhuttl continues to see a future for him at the club, especially following the sale of Matt Targett to Aston Villa, and with the club taking to social media to point out the anniversary, plenty of fans were more than happy to celebrate his time with us so far.
