Southampton can get season back on track after season-defining loss with big appointment – Opinion

|

Southampton 0-9 Leicester City. Even a few days after the record-breaking result, it remains an astonishing scoreline, and also serves as a stark reminder that the Saints are an absolute mess.

The repercussions from the game have been big. Southampton’s higher-ups have been quick to throw their support behind Ralph Hasenhuttl as reported by The Southern Daily Echo, and players and coaching staff have announced via the club’s official website that they will be donating their wages to charity.

As well as the quick response to the disastrous result, The Southern Daily Echo have also claimed that Southampton are considering about signing a Director of Football to aid Hasenhuttl going forward with the club.

With Ross Wilson now at Rangers following the departure of the club’s former director of football operations, there is now a position available within Southampton for a new figure to oversee the team’s player activities, and a DoF is exactly what the Saints need.

The position has become increasingly popular over the past few years, and a DoF is something Hasenhuttl has experience working alongside with during his time at RB Leipzig with Paul Mitchell, who has formed a great reputation for himself as one of the best around in the role in football as reported by Goal.

With Southampton seemingly keen to stick with Hasenhuttl through thick-and-thin, the appointment of a DoF would be something the club should be looking to solve sooner rather than later with the January transfer window just over two months away.

The 9-0 defeat to Leicester will be the result that defines Southampton’s season from here on out, and where the team go from now could be determined by if the club decide to hand Hasenhuttl the tools needed for the Saints manager to fix this mess, and the appointment of a DoF who will be the first major step in the right direction.
