Southampton could be set to cut their losses on Guido Carillo, according to Marca.

They claim Dario Benedetto wants to leave Boca Juniors and the Argentina side would look to the Southampton man as a replacement.

The striker arrived at St Mary’s in January 2018 as the club’s record signing, but his move to the south coast has not worked out.

The 28-year-old spent last season on loan at Leganes and scored six goals in 32 La Liga matches. Transfermarkt value the former Monaco player at £6.75million, and the attacker still has two years remaining on his contract at Southampton.

The arrival of Che Adams from Birmingham City will likely mean Carillo will find himself even further down the pecking order.

Ralph Hasenhuttl is keen to trim the current squad and free up space in the wage bill in order to sign new players and revamp his squad, according to Sky Sports.

Southampton may have work to conduct if they are to off-load Carillo, as Marca claim Boca could attempt to sign West Brom’s Salomon Rondon instead.

Whether Carillo signs for Boca or not, it is difficult to imagine he has a long-term future at St Mary’s with all things considered.
