I didn’t get to this last week sadly, but it can’t go without a mention – Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy finally made his England international debut in last Thursday’s friendly game against the United States.
England manager Gareth Southgate rested usual Number 1 Jordan Pickford at the halftime stage of the game and our 28-year-old took his moment to impress on the Wembley pitch as a second half substitute.
He marked the occasion by keeping himself a clean sheet in the second 45 minutes as he registered his first cap.
Having ended a five year wait to pick up his first cap given previous international involvement going back to the summer of 2013, he certainly didn’t let anyone down and he did a decent job between the sticks, even if he was rarely tested, so he should certainly take the positives from that and the praise that has since come his way.
So happy for #Saintsfc Alex McCarthy playing tonight ???????????? McCarthy and Gunn are two top English scouted signings for our goalkeepers @SouthamptonFC

Alex McCarthy will love the fact he will be coming on for someone other than Mark Hughes and a team that can actually score goals. Unreal moment. #saintsfc
