3 wins, 30 goals conceded: Damming stat is becoming a big problem for Southampton – Opinion

|

An unwritten rule of football is that playing at home gives the host team an advantage over their opponents, yet Southampton doesn’t seem to have received the memo.

The Saints have been the worst-performing team at home in the Premier League this season, with tables from LiveScore showing that Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side have only managed three wins at St. Mary’s, with Southampton also conceding a league-high 30 goals, more than the likes of Norwich City and West Ham.

Saturday’s defeat to Burnley made it eight losses at home this season for the Saints, who were it not for their sensational away form this campaign would be amongst the likes of Watford and Aston Villa in the pits of the Premier League and fighting for survival, and this damming record is starting to become an issue for Southampton.

Seven points is all that separates the Saints from West Ham in 18th place in the Premier League table, and whilst it might not seem like too much of a problem, Southampton’s lack of consistently winning at home and dropping points could see Hasenhuttl’s team drop back into the fight for survival in the English top-flight.

Winning games at home is the basis of succeeding in league football, with current Premier League leaders and pending champions Liverpool yet to drop a single point at Anfield this season as per the LiveScore tables, and with the Saints yet to find any sort of rhythm at St. Mary’s this campaign, Southampton are immediately at a disadvantage to other sides in the division.

Hasenhuttl has the vision and drive to take Southampton further than they ever have in this era of the club’s storied history, yet if the Austrian manager can’t claim three points consistently at home, the Saints are doomed to remain rooted as a mid-table club in the division.
