After two back-to-back wins for Southampton, there was an aura of confidence going into Sunday’s game against Newcastle that the Saints could make it three in a row. This was not to be the case, though.
Late heartache!
Ralph Hasenhüttl on a week of mixed emotions for #SaintsFC:
— Southampton FC (@SouthamptonFC) December 8, 2019
Southampton fell to a 2-1 defeat at St. James Park as Danny Ings handed the Saints the lead before two goals from Jonjo Shelvey and Federico Fernandez secured the three points for the Magpies despite Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side have plenty of chances to build on their earlier lead.
Will Southampton claim Premier League survival?
Yes
No
And the manager’s comments post-match via the club’s official Twitter account did little to improve the mood around the club following this sucker-punch defeat, with Southampton fans on social media yet again divided on their stance on Hasenhuttl after the disappointing loss to Steve Bruce’s Newcastle side.
Here’s what Southampton fans had to say about Hasenhuttl’s comments after the Saints’ defeat to Newcastle, with some supporters divided on where the club are going following this latest set-back…
What’s the matter with you people? Ralph and co have just managed to turn it around. 4 games 7 points that could easily been 12 points. We’re finally playing good again. Get behind the team or beat it

Unlucky today lads, deserved something from the game

How many times have we said that? Two big games to come again.

Some Saints fans were unconvinced on Hasenhuttl after this latest defeat despite the club winning their last two games…
Not good enough Ralph!

Our trams make basic errors week in and week out. Defensive errors have let us down in the main; but today we had a goalkeeping howler and players who spurned chances time and again. They have relegation written all over them possibly the worst top division team we’ve ever had

The result saw Southampton slip back into the relegation zone of the Premier League table.
