With the January transfer window open and new Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl not ruling out a move or two this month to strengthen the group, the rumour mill had mentioned the club in the same breath as Brentford’s talent Chris Mepham.
We had actually been linked with two Brentford players in recent days.
For me, it was certainly the right sought of direction we should be going again, looking to snap up talent from below and develop them further given the failures on identifying expensive targets we’ve had in recent years, but Sky Sports have now claimed that we have cooled our interest in both, but Mepham especially because of the kind of fee that Brentford would prefer to demand and Bournemouth were now in pole position.

Fans reacting to the link thought it was simply typical Southampton unwilling to spend money again, but if the lad is available, this could be a massive mistake given his development potential and despite our expensive mistakes in the market, plenty will ask where has the rest of the money gone given what we’ve brought in over recent years.
