With many Southampton fans believing that the club have struck a fantastic deal with Aston Villa when it came to the sale of Academy graduate Matt Targett, there were plenty of good wishes being expressed from the fanbase when the transfer went through this week.
The 23-year-old left back departs on a deal that will be ultimately worth around the £17million mark for us and with only 63 appearances to his name, few could argue that wasn’t a very decent price indeed for the lad.
With Ryan Bertrand ahead of him in the pecking order under manager Ralph Hasenhuttl, knowing this deal more than covers the arrival of Che Adams, from a priority aspect of improving the first team squad there can also be no complaints.
There are plenty who would’ve liked to see him stay though as our long term option on the left hand side of defence, and many now simply hope he develops into the player we all hoped he would do and he really becomes another of our homegrown successes – just not for two games a season for obvious reasons.
All the best Matty, a lifelong Saint who lived the dream by representing his boyhood club ????❤️
