With the speculation linking Southampton with former RB Leipzig gaffer Ralph Hasenhuttl as Mark Hughes’ replacement, the rumour mill moved into a higher gear yesterday evening.

The general theme is it’ll only be a matter of time before he’s announced as our new manager and an announcement is expected today, in readiness for him to take a watching brief from the stands as we face Tottenham Hotspur later this evening.

The Guardian were one of a number to claim or imply the above was the case and Hasenhuttl does appear to have a good pedigree and some pundits have already likened his style of football to what we’ve seen before under a certain Mauricio Pochettino – so his appointment won’t change things overnight but we may finally be back on the right track.

Fans will be fans on social media with Timo Werner’s development under Hasenhuttl at Leipzig, plenty are hoping they are reunited in the January window.

The Werner stuff I imagine would be pie in the sky unless we were to send a real message in January with spending, but the shouts for Arsene Wenger and Paul Mitchell…well, somebody has to replace Les Reed and whilst Wenger feels far-fetched, former Tottenham’s Mitchell has seen his stock rise since he headed to Germany and he came up on our Facebook feed when I covered the speculation yesterday so plenty of fans are thinking in that direction given they already know each other.

Have to see what the day brings now.
